John and Kathy approached us with a fun challenge. Kathy’s 90 year old mother, Sue, had just moved in and was in need of some space she could call her own. In order for Sue to live on the main floor with comfort and privacy, John and Kathy wanted to significantly modify the existing layout and amenities. We partnered with J. Jorgensen Designs to create beautiful solutions to meet the needs of the entire family. Kathy also wanted to have a space of her own in the basement which she could use as a sewing room.
To overhaul the traditional suburban floor plan, renovations included:
Transforming the first floor powder room into a ¾-bath and adding beautiful french doors to the den. This included a fully accessible shower with multiple elegant handicap bars, a bench, and gorgeous tile work. The den became Sue’s sitting room when we added the french doors.
Renovating the 2nd floor master bathroom. This part of the remodel project included expanding the shower, adding a second shower-head – a lovely rainfall from the ceiling – a bench, and installing two tiled nooks for storage. A double vanity and new lighting completed the overhaul of this functional and gorgeous space.
Creating finished square footage in the basement. We added 500 square-feet of living space with an egress window to bring more light into the space. New spaces included a playroom for the grandchildren, a sewing room for Kathy, and a beautiful barrel-ceiling hallway at the bottom of the now finished stairs. We also added french doors to the sewing room and storage spaces which were designed specifically for Kathy’s needs. The egress window brings value to the home because it creates another official bedroom.
Kathy I am so excited to see the finished project. It looks just amazing. Great job Emily and Nordhaus Design.
